QUESTION: I've read that the wind speed can increase greatly during the Martian winters. What type of wind speeds can we expect? When can we expect the Sagan Memorial Station to experience these high winds, and will it (and the rover) survive them? ANSWER from Bob Haberle on November 10, 1997: Based on our Viking experience, Pathfinder can expect winter winds that could gust up to 30 m/s (~60 mph). The spacecraft is certainly able to survive such winds as would be the Sojourner rover. However, we will probably never know if such winds actually materialized since we have lost communication with Patfhinder and suspect that we will never be able to restablish a link. It appears that the mission is over. Robert M. Haberle Space Science Division NASA Ames Research Center
