QUESTION: Is it always windy on Mars? ANSWER from Mary Urquhart on February 11, 1997: How windy a particular place is on Mars varies from day to day and from season to season just like it does on the Earth. Some days it is very windy, and other days it is fairly calm. A typical wind speed at the two Viking landing sites was less than 17 kilometers per hour (or about 11 mph). Much higher speed winds are believed to cause the dust storms that can be observed from the Earth at certain Martian seasons. Suggestion: Find out what the average wind speed is where you live on a calm day and on a windy day and then compare your calm and windy wind speeds with the typical Viking value I gave above.
