QUESTION: Will the rover go on any polar ice caps? ANSWER from Wendy Calvin on January 31, 1997: No, the first rover, Sojourner, won't get close to the polar caps. Because both the spacecraft and the rover are powered by the sun, they must land where there is lots of sunshine, this usually means near the equator. Where, on the surface of a planet, the sun is directly overhead depends on the season. Mars has seasons very similar to earth, although the Mars year is twice as long as the Earth year. The Pathfinder lander will land at about 20 degrees north. On Earth, where is this line of 20 degrees north latitude? If you look at a globe you'll see this is quite far away from the poles. Because Sojourner needs to talk to the Pathfinder lander it won't get out of site of the lander. This means Sojourner will only "rove" 10 to 100 yards from the Lander, or, it will only get about a football field away.
