QUESTION: How can you drive the rover based upon an image that takes so long to came to Earth? ANSWER from Pieter Kallemeyn on July 28, 1997: The rover is driven _very_ slowly and precisely, and only after careful analysis of the last picture taken. Also, the rover will stop automatically if it thinks it has detected a hazard. So the 10-12 minute time lag is no problem. It's very much like driving blindfolded in a parking lot, but you drive slowly only a few feet at a time, you're allowed to peek every so often, and you have a very good visual map of the parking lot inside your head.
