QUESTION: What is the maximum effective search range/radius from the Pathfinder base station? Because you only have a limited time schedule, do you intend to just stay close to base, or move further out, if anything in the distance looks interesting? ANSWER from J. Matijevic on July 29, 1997: The nominal operating range of 'Sojourner' from the lander is approximately 10m (radial distance). Beyond this range the rover does not subtend a sufficient image in the IMP (lander camera) pictures to be localized or otherwise supported in its hazard avoidance planning by ground operators. There remain plenty of interesting targets within 10m of our landing site for the rover to explore. We do plan to drive the rover further from the lander, using rover images to substitute/augment the images from the IMP. The range limit in that case is nominally 500m, the range of communication between the rover and lander.
