QUESTION: When the first Pathfinder images were being downloaded, I was watching live on CNN. I noticed that you were using a popular Unix shareware graphics package called "xv". I also noticed the words "Unregistered" when you started up the package on what appeard to be a Silicon Graphics workstation. I know that Pathfinder was a low budget mission, but i'm sure you could afford the $25 shareware registration fee to continue using this wonderful package. ANSWER from Donna Shirley on October 7, 1997: An order was placed last month to obtain four licenses. By the way, what was shown on the screen was a copy of the xv program which was obtained by an end user and installed in his personal user's account. Because of the nature of the shareware product being freely available over the Internet, there was no way that I could have completely prevented the use of shareware (or freeware) without constant monitoring. Also, because of the vague nature of the XV shareware license (it allows free use for the casual user but not a frequent user), the determination of whether to obtain licenses becomes subjective. Nevertheless, the check is in the mail for four (4) XV licenses.
