QUESTION: Why doesn't NASA have a simulated site complete with a duplicate Pathfinder and Sojourner? ANSWER from Charles Whetsel on July 28, 1997: We do have a simulated site complete with duplicates of both the Pathfinder Lander and the Sojourner Rover (as well as simulated Martian rocks and soil). It is located next door to the Mission Control room which was televised so frequently over the preceeding few weeks. It was used extensively during the test and training exercises prior to landing and has been used to validate many of the sequences sent to Pathfinder since landing. So far, no one has recreated all of the rock formations around the lander to represent the actual landing site, but this could be done in short notice should the need arise.
