QUESTION: Will someone make globes of Mars after the MGS maps the surface of Mars? ANSWER from Peter Thomas on February 27, 1997: There will be new versions of Mars globes, though the improvement over old globes may not be huge, because the very high resoltuion images to be taken by the camera cover only a very small fraction of the planet. Things which will probably be incorporated in new globes will be more realistic colors, taken directly from the images, and better conversion from the digital image data to the physical printer covers for globes. Electronic globes, that is fly-arounds using the digital data may become one of the chief ways of quickly scanning regions of Mars. But old fashioned, physical globes will stay helpful for a long time.
