view_of-CARA_1 ... (38K) Here is a picture of two of the CARA structures taken at the South Pole in January of 1994. On the right is the platform and shielding for the COBRA Python telescope, which is used to survey the radiation from the Big Bang at a scale of about one degree on the sky. To the left in the background is the AST/RO building. When this picture was taken it supported the SPIREX telescope. During the 1994/95 summer season the 1.7 meter submilliter AST/RO telescope will be installed here and the SPIREX telescope moved to a new tower. The snow was blowing on this day so visiblity is limited, but if you could see well you would see the South Pole station about 1 km beyond the AST/RO building.
