Hello fellow LFHST teachers,

It's been my experience, as a middle school teacher, that a
structured approach to accessing the rich and wonderful resources on the
LFHST Home Page can prove most useful. While we would each like to give
students ample time for individual research at this site, parading 160
students per day through our 12 station lab seemed to warrant a somewhat
directed approach. ( Chaos was not an intended topic for this endeavor ).
Therefore, just as sample worksheets and assessment tools were shared
during LFS, I thought I might contribute a sample used by my own students.
Obviously, it can and should be modified for your own grade level and
situation.

                                                In your service,
                                                Tim McCollum

Congratulations! You are a member of the first group of K-12 students to
participate and contribute to "real-time science" using NASA's Hubble Space
Telescope. Follow the web links below to access the Live From the HST Home
Page and find the answers to the questions.

Live from the Hubble Space Telescope

Background -

1. When was HST deployed?

2. In which parts of the electromagnetic spectrum is HST able to "see" light?

3. What is the main advantage of placing a telescope, such as HST, in orbit
around the Earth?

4. Locate a diagram of HST to help you label the parts shown below.

5. Locate the listing of science objectives for HST. Why do you think
these reasons are important to astronomers?

6. Just for fun - check out the Postcards from the Edge of Time and Space.

7. Describe one spinoff technology from HST that is improving the quality
of life for certain people.

History of the Hubble Space Telescope -

8. HST is designed to have a resolving power ( ability to see detail )
___?____ times that of Earth based telescopes.

                                Answer __________

9. Shortly after HST was placed into orbit, a flaw was discovered which
greatly reduced its ability to focus clearly on the most distant objects.
What was the cause of this flaw and how was it later corrected?

About the Planets -

10. Which three planets of our solar system will be viewing targets of HST
during the LFHST program?

Planet 1 ________________________

11. What do you find interesting about this planet?

12. Why might an astronomer want to study this planet?

Planet 2 ________________________

13. What do you find interesting about this planet?

14. Why might an astronomer want to study this planet?

Planet 3 ________________________

15. What do you find interesting about this planet?
