QUESTION: What do you eat in Antarctica? Can you get pizza? Do you catch any of your own food in the ocean? From, Steve O., Fifth Grader at Centerpoint in White Bear Lake, Mn., Mr. Kent Peterson's class. ANSWER from Mary Lenox, ASA, Administrative Coordinator Palmer Station, Antarctica Wed, 19 Feb 1997 16:57:08 -0500 Hi, Steve! I am from Minneapolis so I know you live in a very pretty place. I look forward to being there this summer. We eat pretty much the same things that you do. We have two cooks that cook three meals a day except on Sundays. On Sundays we either cook for ourselves, eat leftovers, or sometimes volunteers cook for the community. So for breakfast we might have pancakes, eggs, french toast, cereal, oatmeal, sweet rolls or breakfast burritos. For lunch we often have soup, sandwiches, hamburgers and vegie burgers for those of us who don't eat meat, quiche, Mexican food, or many other things. For dinner we often have steak, roast, pork chops, potatos, corn, peas, some other vegetable, a lettuce salad if we have fresh ingredients available, a vegetarian entree, fresh bread and dessert. Sometimes the cooks get creative and cook East Indian food or Thai or Chinese food, or make sushi. Yum! Pizza night is another big favorite around here. We are really well fed! The only food I have had that was caught in this area is a couple of types of fish. The scientists were using lots of different parts of the fish for their research, but not the filets. The scientists prepared a fish dinner for us one Sunday and it was really good. Cheers, Mary Lenox
