QUESTION: Are there any insects in Antarctica,if so, what do they feed on? Rose C., Mrs. Garvin's Science Class Mauldin Elementary, Mauldin, SC ANSWER from Mary Lenox, Antarctic Support Associates Palmer Station, Antarctica Tue, 15 Apr 1997 11:51:58 -0500 Hello, Rose. There are a couple of species of insects that I am aware of and most of them feed on the sea birds. Many of the birds have mites and ticks, just like the bird in North America. I understand that some of the species can survive the extreme cold in the various stages of their development so that a severe winter does not destroy them. On station, I have seen moths and fruit flies, but as soon as the source of their infestation is removed, they disappear, too. They arrive in with our fresh fruits and vegetables, and in perishables like nuts. Thanks for your good question. Cheers, Mary Lenox
