Over the last 20 years scientists from the United States and other countries
have collected 16,000 meteorites at various sites around Antarctica.
Because the antarctic environment is extremely cold and dry, the meterorites
are protected from contamination and erosion. Some of these meteorites are
extremely rare, and scientists have proofen that they are from the Moon and
Mars.

Recently, some scientists working at National Aeronautics and Space
Administration reported that they believe that they have found evidence of
life on Mars 3.6 billion years ago. Other researchers indiciate that the
carbon compounds formed at extremely high temperatures (greater than 1,150
degrees F) in the absence of water--conditions that are supportive of life.
