Where do most of the animals go in the winter months?

Julia, that is truly one of the most important questions we as
    ecologists are asking these days.  The fact is that we know
    very little about the winter ecology of most of the animals.
    What we know is that most animals can be classified as ice-
    tolerant and ice intolerant, meaning some winter in association
    with the ice and others prefer to be in open water.  But where
    they go exactly remains a mystery at the moment for most of
    the species in the area.
