QUESTION: Do penguins snore? We were curious after we learned that they sleep in any position. From the sixth grade students in Mrs. Gindorff's class Brimhall Elementary School in Roseville, MN. ANSWER from Donna Patterson, Resercher, Dr. Fraser's Team Palmer Station, Antarctica Fri, 21 Mar 1997 15:17:29 -0500 Hello Mrs. Gindorff's 6th Grade Class, I have not ever heard a penguin snore the way that humans do, however, they do breathe very deeply when sleeping and sometimes we hear that when passing by one outside of a colony. It is very difficult to hear something that specific when the birds are in the colonies as there is always noise and activity during the breeding season. I have seen Adelie penguins sleep while standing up at their nest sites, but they seem more alert and wake up easily at even small noises. Donna Patterson
