QUESTION: Could you explain the seasons in Antarctica? On your broadcast you said it was spring there? But isn't it summer in South America? I am confused? From Kristen C., 7th Grader, Mrs. Ryan's Class Dolan Middle School Stamford, CT ANSWER from Janet Phillips, Palmer Station, Antarctica Tue, 11 Feb 1997 11:20:05 -0500 Hi Kristen, The seasons here in Antarctica are the same as in South America. The soltice and equinox dates determine the seasons. Austral Summer is from 21 December to 20 March, Fall is from 20 March to 21 June, Winter is from 21 June to 22 September, and Spring is from 22 September to 21 December. So you're right, it is summer here now. I'm sure the reference to spring on the show was much the same as you might casually mention "What a cold winter it is!" in May if you happen to be in a northern state like Minnesota. Thanks for your question! Janet
