QUESTION: How do American scientists share their findings with scientists in Antarctica from other countries? From Danny A. 8th Grader at John Morel Intermediate, Brooklyn, NY. ANSWER from POLLY PENHALE, NSF Program Manager Organization: Palmer Station, Antarctica Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 20:23:58 -0500 The Antarctic Treaty nations created a scientific organization designed to provide for information exchange. This organization is called the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research, known as SCAR. SCAR's purpose is to provide scientific advice to the Treaty members and to share findings from research. SCAR meeting are held every two years. Scientists in all disciplines from about 30 countries meet to share results from studies and to plan future studies. Many projects in Antarctica are multi-national, in which scientists from several countries work together. One of the most interesting aspects of working in Antarctica is getting the chance to meet people from other countries and learning about not only their science but their cultures as well.
