QUESTION: Has anyone ever sailed around the entire coastline of Antarctica? Joe O., 3rd grader in Thomas Lewis' class at Burnley-Moran School, Charlottesville, Virginia ANSWER from Oceanographer, Dave Karl Univeristy of Hawaii Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1997 11:09:03 -1000 (HST) That is a very good question and a very great challenge to sail around (circumnavigate) the continent of Antarctica. Although there may have been some early explorers who accomplished the feat, most recently a scientific cruise on a US Coast Guard Icebreaker circumnavigated the continent in part to survey the entire coast line for possible sites for new Antarctic research base. I know about this cruise because my mentor and colleague Dr Osmund Holm-Hansen from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California was a member of the science party. If you would like to know what this incredible voyage must have been like, how long it took or other details of the expedition you can contact him directly. I believe he is currently in Antarctica aboard a Russian research vessel so he may not get your request right away...but keep trying. Thanks so much for this interesting question! Dave
