QUESTION: Hi! We are two fifth grade students doing a project on the Polar Duke.We were wondering if you could send us the several risks aboard the Polar Duke because we could only find three. From Drew W. & Matthew V. ANSWER from Janet Barnes, Aboard the RV Polar Duke Sat, 5 Apr 1997 17:30:34 +0000 (GMT) Hi Drew and Matthew! Working on a ship down here in the Antarctic can be very hazardous. One must be careful at all times not to be injured or to fall overboard. The cold water will cause hypothemia in minutes. The water tight doors are very heavy and can crush hands if one is not careful. Sea sickness is very common when the seas are rough. The climate is so cold and dry one can become dehydrated or easily become sunburned or frostbitten if your skin is not protected. We work with heavy equipment, cranes, and cables and must work safely with these items. We must work safely with all of the different types of chemicals in the ship's laboratories. These are only some of the hazards and all of us attend safety classes and see safety videos to train us so that we can work safely on the ships. Thanks for your question. Janet Barnes
