QUESTION: How fast can the penquins run? Joey, Grade 6, 7 , 8, Strafford School Strafford, New Hampshire ANSWER from David Lott, Research Assistant, Palmer Station, Antarctica Fri, 14 Feb 1997 14:59:59 -0500 Well, Joey, I can't give you an answer in miles per hour. However, I do know that they can be quite speedy when they want. In fact, they are fastest on land when they lie on their stomachs and push themselves along with their feet. When there was snow on the ground or the rocks were slick, the penguins could slide along very rapidly. They seem to do this most when other penguins would chase them or if they were threatened in some other manner. Thanks for your question! David
