QUESTION: How long do baby penguins stay with their mothers? Lauren T., 8th grader at Ridgeview Middle School Atlanta, Georgia. ANSWER from Lori Ross, Research Assistant, Carol Vleck's Team Palmer Station, Antarctica Wed, 12 Feb 1997 12:23:33 -0500 Dear Lauren, After the chicks hatch, they must be 'brooded' by either the mother or the father. Adelie penguins have a special pouch on their stomachs which helps to keep the eggs warm until they hatch. This pouch also keeps the chicks warm when they are small. Thus, one parent is always with the chicks to keep them warm and protect them from skuas until the chicks are able to protect themselves. The mother and father take turns watching the chicks while the other is out finding food. About 23 days after hatching, the chicks will gather in groups in the middle of the colonies. These groups are called creches. When the chicks are in the creche, it is safe for both parents to leave to find food. The chicks will huddle together for warmth and are usually large enough to avoid skua attacks. Thanks for your question! Lori Ross
