QUESTION: What have you learned from Antarctic scientists from other countries that might help you with your research? ANSWER from Bill Fraser, Ecologist/Ornithologist, Antarctica My research has historically focused on the foraging ecology of seabirds and, lately, penguins in particular. "Foraging ecology" means that I am interested in not only what seabirds eat, but how they get their food and how their food supplies in the ocean change from year to year. These are complex ecological problems, meaning that it is often not possible to cover all the bases at one time. That is where other researchers can help. For example, the Germans have done great surveys of fish populations in the area where I work, and the British have supplied me with data on intertidal creatures that seabirds eat. To think about how all this might work, imagine that you are trying to put together a huge puzzle. Some of the pieces to the puzzle you find on your own, but others are found by your fellow "researchers" interested in the same puzzle.
