QUESTION: How many different kinds of penguins are there in Antarctica? From Sierra, Wines Elementary School Ann Arbor, Michigan ANSWER from Steven Downey, Doctoral Student, University of Illinois Wed, 19 Feb 1997 12:16:56 -0500 Dear Sierra, Depending on where you draw the boundaries of Antarctica, there are six or seven different species: Adelies, Chinstraps, Emperors, Gentoos, Kings, Macaronis, and Rockhoppers. Emperors and Kings are the largest, standing over three feet high and weighing from 35 pounds (Kings) to 65 pounds (Emperors). Adelies, Chinstraps, Gentoos, and Macaronis step up at approximate 27 to 30 inches and weigh on average from 9 to 13 pounds. Rockhoppers are the smallest. They stand only 21 inches high and weigh about 5 or 6 pounds. Thanks for your question! Steven
