Hi Chris,

Palmer Station was built over several years, 1967-1970, by the US 
Navy.  The purpose of the station is to provide a facility for science 
to be conducted by National Science Foundation funded researchers in 
the Antarctic Peninsula region.  The Anvers Island location was 
chosen because of the surrounding areas biological richness, as well 
as good ship access and a fresh water source from glacier melt-off.
